That has been a quiet revolution for consumers - DStv decoders are slowly being replaced by Showmax and DStv Stream, the family lounge has become the gaming room thanks to native Twitch and YouTube apps, and load-shedding survival now depends as much on a working Smart TV interface as it does on a stable inverter. But it has also created an entirely new class of repair problem. When a 2014-era LCD TV failed, the fault was almost always a capacitor or a backlight strip. When a 2024 Smart TV fails, the fault is just as likely to be a corrupted firmware partition, a stuck app cache, or a Wi-Fi module that has thermally degraded over thousands of hours of streaming.

Samsung's Tizen platform, used across every Samsung Smart TV from 2015 onwards (and now extending into Samsung-branded monitors and digital signage), is one of the more locked-down Smart TV operating systems. Tizen failures usually present as boot-loop or as a stubborn refusal to load the Samsung Hub. Recovery requires service-mode access via the standard remote sequence, followed by a USB-based factory image flash. We carry Tizen images covering every Samsung sold in South Africa from the 2016 KU range right through to the latest Neo QLED models.

LG's webOS is arguably the most user-friendly Smart TV platform on the market, with the famous LG Magic Remote and the elegant ribbon-style launcher. The classic webOS faults we see are "webOS update failed" loops, the persistent black screen after a botched update, and the LG webOS app store failing to load. Most are resolved through the LG service-menu recovery mode and a clean re-flash from USB. We support webOS 1.0 through to the current webOS 23 build used on the latest LG OLED evo G3, M3 and C3 panels.

Hisense's VIDAA is increasingly common in South Africa thanks to Hisense's aggressive pricing strategy. VIDAA U2 through U7 covers virtually every modern Hisense LED and ULED set sold here. Common faults include the Showmax error 4-19 (cache mismatch), Netflix's HDCP black screen, and the persistent "App is no longer supported" message that hits older VIDAA U2 sets. All routine for us.

Google TV (Sony, TCL, the latest Hisense and Skyworth models) and the older Android TV (Sony Bravia 2017-2021, Skyworth) require a slightly different toolset because they are essentially full Android builds with TV-specific layers. We use ADB over network for diagnostics, sideload recovery images when needed, and have factory firmware archives for the most common Bravia X-series, TCL Cxxx series and Skyworth UC9 sets. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Network Hardware on Modern Smart TVs

Every modern Smart TV ships with a combination Wi-Fi/Bluetooth module mounted to the main board. These modules are small, cheap, generally reliable - and increasingly the part that fails first as a Smart TV ages. The symptoms are very recognisable. The TV initially connects to your home Wi-Fi normally, but drops the connection after a few minutes. The 5GHz band stops working entirely, leaving the TV stuck on slower 2.4GHz with degraded streaming quality. Bluetooth pairing to soundbars or game controllers becomes intermittent. And in the worst cases the TV refuses to find any Wi-Fi network at all.

The first step in our diagnostic is to confirm the fault is actually in the TV and not in your home network. We bring our own portable hotspot, run a controlled connection test, and check signal strength logged through the manufacturer's service menu. If the TV is genuinely the problem, we then determine whether the issue is firmware-side (corrupted network stack, often recoverable with a re-flash) or hardware-side (module degradation, requires physical replacement). Module replacement involves disassembling the rear panel, removing the existing module, fitting a genuine OEM replacement, reseating the antenna leads with the correct torque, and re-testing both 2.4GHz and 5GHz with multiple streaming services.

Smart Hardware - When the Main Board Is the Problem

Occasionally the smart side of a TV fails for reasons that no amount of re-flashing will fix. The most common is partial EEPROM corruption - a state where the TV boots, the picture works, but app data or DRM keys are damaged in ways that prevent Netflix or Showmax from running. Another is NAND wear on older Sony Bravia X750/X800 series, which used a single soldered NAND chip rated for a finite number of write cycles. Both faults require component-level work at the bench, with EEPROM programmers, hot-air rework stations and brand-specific service binaries.
