Backlight Replacement - The Most Common LED Job We Do
If your LED television has sound but no picture - or a dim, patchy, or banded picture that has noticeably worsened over the past few months - you are almost certainly looking at backlight failure. The LEDs that illuminate the LCD panel from behind have a finite operational lifespan, typically rated at 30,000 to 50,000 hours by the manufacturer. In South African mains conditions, with frequent load-shedding cycles and voltage variability, real-world lifespan tends to be shorter - we routinely see strip failure at the four to seven-year mark on panels that have been used four to six hours daily.
The repair process is methodical. We disassemble the panel in our ESD-safe workshop, remove the bezel and rear shielding, separate the LCD layer from the diffuser stack and light guide, and access the LED strips themselves. Each strip is tested individually with a calibrated LED tester to identify which have failed, which are open-circuit, and which are still working but degraded. Because all strips in a panel are matched at the factory for colour temperature and brightness, mixing old and new strips produces visible banding. Our standard practice is therefore to replace all strips in the affected panel as a complete matched set - even when only one or two have actually failed. The cost difference is small; the difference in long-term picture uniformity is substantial.
Once the new strips are fitted, we re-calibrate the LED driver current to the original factory specification. This step is genuinely important - it is the difference between a repair that lasts another decade and one that re-fails within months. The repaired panel is then reassembled, tested across full-white, full-grey, gradient and high-contrast pattern displays, and finally tested on real content (Showmax, DStv Stream, broadcast TV) to confirm uniformity and full functionality.
LED Power-Supply, T-Con and Main-Board Work
The second most common LED fault category is power-supply board failure. Symptoms typically include a TV that simply refuses to power on, a TV that powers on briefly then trips off, or one that displays a flickering or short-cycling standby LED. The root cause is almost always one or two failed electrolytic capacitors on the primary or secondary side of the power supply. Less commonly we see failed MOSFETs in the switching stage or a failed bridge rectifier after a serious surge event. The T-Con (timing controller) board sits between the main board and the LCD panel itself, converting the video data into the precise voltage patterns that drive each row and column of pixels. T-Con failures present as lines across the screen, half-screen failures, garbled or pixelated images, or complete pixel failure on one side of the panel. Diagnosis is straightforward with the right equipment and replacement boards are available for most modern LED panels. Total cost typically R1,100 to R2,900.
