QLED stands for "Quantum-dot Light-Emitting Diode" and it is a name Samsung trademarked in 2017 to differentiate their flagship LCD televisions from the LG OLED line that was rapidly gaining critical acclaim. The technology is straightforward in concept - a thin film of quantum dots is laminated between the LCD panel and the LED backlight, and these microscopic semiconductor particles convert the blue LED light into precise, pure red, green and blue wavelengths. The result is a wider colour gamut, brighter whites and more saturated colours than a traditional LED panel can produce. Crucially, QLED is still fundamentally an LCD panel with a backlight - which is what separates it from the self-emissive OLED architecture.
Samsung's Neo QLED, launched in 2021, adds Mini-LED backlighting to the QLED stack. Instead of large LEDs in a small number of zones, Neo QLED uses thousands of much smaller LEDs in hundreds or thousands of local dimming zones, delivering near-OLED contrast on what is still a much brighter LCD panel. Hisense ULED is the brand-name equivalent on Hisense televisions, used across the U6, U7 and U8 series. TCL QLED is TCL's own quantum-dot implementation on the C-series and P-series panels. All three share the same core architecture - quantum-dot enhancement film, LCD panel, LED or Mini-LED backlight - but each uses different parts, board layouts, service menus and firmware. The single repair category most unique to QLED work is Mini-LED zone driver repair. On a Neo QLED, Hisense U8 or TCL C-series Mini-LED panel, the backlight is made up of thousands of tiny LEDs grouped into hundreds or even thousands of independently-dimmable zones. Each cluster of LEDs is driven by a small zone driver IC, and these driver ICs sit in arrays across multiple driver boards inside the back of the panel. When one zone driver IC fails, the corresponding region of the screen goes dark while the rest of the panel continues to display normally. The fault looks dramatic - a dark stripe, a black square, a corner that has gone dim - but it is fully repairable at the component level. We use microscope-assisted hot-air rework to remove the failed IC, fit a genuine replacement, and re-test the entire zone array before re-fitting the diffuser stack and reassembling the panel.
The same fundamental approach applies to LED cluster repair within a zone. If the driver IC is healthy but the LEDs themselves have aged unevenly within a specific cluster, we replace the cluster as a matched unit so the brightness remains uniform across the panel. Typical total cost for a Mini-LED zone or cluster repair lands at R1,700 to R3,400 depending on screen size and brand, compared with a replacement Neo QLED at R25,000 to R55,000.
On Samsung Neo QLED (QN85, QN90, QN95, QN800, QN900 series), the most common faults are Mini-LED zone driver failures, NQ8 processor overheating on QN95 sets installed in poorly ventilated wall-mount cavities, and HDMI 2.1 handshake drops with PS5 and Xbox Series X on the QN90/QN91 4K models.
