An OLED panel does not have a backlight. Each individual pixel generates its own light from a stack of organic light-emitting compounds - the "O" in OLED. That is what gives an OLED its trademark perfect black levels, its near-infinite contrast ratio, and the cinematic depth that makes a well-mastered Showmax film or a properly graded DStv broadcast look so dramatically better on an OLED than on any backlit panel. But it also means the panel itself is fundamentally different from an LED LCD - more delicate, more sensitive to manufacturing tolerance, and impossible to repair in the same way that LED strips can simply be swapped out.

That has real consequences for how OLED repair has to be approached. We diagnose the T-Con timing signals on the bench, then either component-repair or board-swap the T-Con, depending on what is most economical. It depends where the lines come from. Vertical or horizontal black lines on an OLED can sometimes be traced to a failed ribbon cable connection, a damaged T-Con board, or a marginal driver IC - all of which are repairable. If the lines come from physical damage to the OLED layer itself (a crack, dent or stress fracture), the panel has to be replaced - and OLED panel replacement parts are very expensive, often making the repair uneconomical. The trade-off, of course, is that OLED is a more delicate technology, with its own characteristic failure patterns and significantly more expensive replacement parts when something does go wrong. How OLED Actually Works - And Why That Matters For Repair

An OLED panel is built from a stack of organic compounds that emit light when current passes through them. Each individual sub-pixel - red, green, blue (and in WOLED designs, white) - is its own tiny light source, with no shared backlight at all. That is why an OLED can deliver a true black on one pixel and full-brightness peak white on an adjacent pixel at the same time, with no halo bleed in between. The supporting electronics are very specific to this architecture - in particular the T-Con board has to manage panel timing across millions of independently-lit sub-pixels at high refresh rates, and the power supply has to deliver carefully regulated current to the OLED layer without any of the inrush surges that an LED-LCD can tolerate.

What that means for repair is that OLED faults very rarely look anything like LED faults. You will almost never see a half-dark OLED in the way you might see a half-dark LED panel after backlight strip failure - OLED has no backlight to fail. Instead the typical OLED fault patterns are tinting (a T-Con timing problem), lines (T-Con, ribbon or driver IC), no boot (power supply or main board), no sound (in Sony's case, often the Acoustic Surface actuator), and image retention (panel-side compensation problem, usually cleared with a pixel refresher).

OLED Image Retention vs Permanent Burn-In - The Critical Distinction

One of the most common worries we hear from Gauteng OLED owners is whether their TV has "burn-in". The honest answer is that the distinction between temporary image retention and permanent burn-in matters enormously, and they require very different responses. Image retention is a short-term, recoverable phenomenon where a static image (a news ticker, a game HUD, a channel logo) has been displayed for long enough to temporarily charge the affected sub-pixels above their neighbours. It looks like a faint ghost of the previous image, especially visible on uniform mid-grey scenes. Permanent burn-in is a different beast. It happens when sub-pixels have aged unevenly across thousands of hours of static content, to the point where they emit measurably less light than their neighbours for any equivalent input. Once that happens, no refresher cycle can recover it - the affected pixels are simply older than the rest of the panel. The good news is that severe burn-in is genuinely rare in normal household use. LG, Sony and Panasonic have all built increasingly aggressive automatic pixel compensation routines into their OLEDs since 2018, and a modern OLED used for normal mixed content (movies, sport, gaming, news) for four to six hours a day will typically never develop visible burn-in across its lifetime. We see severe burn-in mostly in commercial settings where TVs have been left on the same news channel for 14 hours a day for years.

LG, Sony and Panasonic OLED - Brand-Specific Service Notes

About 75% of the OLED repairs we handle in Gauteng are LG OLED (B, C, G and now M series), which reflects LG's dominant market share. The most common LG OLED fault patterns we see are pink or green tinting (T-Con timing fault, R1,700 to R3,400), webOS boot loops after a botched firmware update (recoverable with a service-mode re-flash, R660 to R1,100), HDMI port damage on the wall-mounted G-series (R780 to R1,700), and power-supply capacitor failure on the older B7 and B8 sets after years of load-shedding cycles.

Sony OLED presents its own distinctive faults.
