This FAQ has been built from the genuine questions our team receives by phone, WhatsApp and email every single week. It covers the eight topics that come up most: pricing, repair turnaround, the brands we work on, our service model, our warranty, the areas we cover, payment options and smart TV specifics. Use the pills above to jump straight to a topic, or scroll through the entire list.

Pricing & Quotes

TV repair pricing in Gauteng ranges from R550 for minor software re-flashes and small capacitor work, up to about R5,400 for full main-board swaps on 75-inch flagship sets. The vast majority of common faults — HDMI ports, power supplies, Wi-Fi modules, sound issues — fall between R1,100 and R2,900. The biggest pricing drivers are the type of fault, the panel size, the brand and the parts availability. For a category-by-category breakdown see our full TV repair cost guide.

Four things drive almost every Rand on a TV repair quote: the type of fault (a firmware re-flash is dramatically cheaper than a backlight replacement), the panel size (a 75-inch repair requires more parts, more labour and more handling than a 32-inch unit), the brand and the parts supply chain in South Africa, and whether we work in your home or in our workshop. Workshop service is typically R240 to R480 cheaper than the equivalent in-home job because we have access to full bench equipment and no travel time.

Our standard workshop diagnostic fee is R420 and is fully waived if you approve the repair. For in-home diagnostics in our core service area (Johannesburg, Sandton, Pretoria, Midrand, Randburg, Soweto) the same R420 covers the call-out and is again waived on repair approval. Areas further afield incur a travel surcharge between R180 and R550 depending on distance — always quoted up front. There is never a hidden charge.

Yes, always. Once the diagnosis is complete we send you a written WhatsApp or email quote that lists the fault, the recommended repair, the parts, the labour and the total in Rand. No work begins until you reply with explicit approval. If you choose not to proceed, only the diagnostic fee is payable.

Yes, on minor faults. If you've brought us a small repair (firmware, HDMI port, capacitor, remote sensor) and we are genuinely unable to resolve it, you pay nothing. On larger jobs where parts are ordered specifically for your TV — backlight strip kits, OEM main boards, T-Con boards — the parts are non-returnable and a charge applies, but we always tell you this in writing before ordering.

Repairs & Turnaround

Most common TV repairs are completed same-day. Firmware re-flash, HDMI port work, power-supply capacitor replacement, sound IC repair, Wi-Fi module swaps and remote sensor work are typically finished within hours. Backlight strip replacement is usually 24 to 48 hours due to disassembly time. Main-board level repair on flagship 75 and 85-inch sets occasionally takes 3 to 5 working days when waiting for OEM parts.

Yes. Same-day repairs are available when you call before 12pm, when your suburb falls inside our core same-day coverage zone, and when the parts required for your fault are in stock. The majority of bookings in this category are resolved by 6pm the same day. See our same-day TV repair page for full eligibility and response times.

Component-level wherever it makes sense. Replacing single failed capacitors, MOSFETs, sound amplifier ICs, HDMI sockets and individual LEDs is dramatically cheaper for you and reduces electronic waste. We only swap full boards when the fault is so extensive that component-level repair is no longer economical, or when an EEPROM-locked region of the board has been damaged.

Honestly — usually not economically. A genuine LCD or OLED panel replacement on a 55-inch set costs more than buying a new TV outright, because the panel is by far the most expensive component. We will always tell you straight whether your specific model is worth attempting. For everything that is not panel damage (cracked glass screens being a separate matter from panel damage), repair is almost always worthwhile.

Yes — this is one of the most common repair types we see. South African mains conditions, load-shedding and afternoon thunderstorms together account for the majority of power-supply and main-board failures. We trace the damage carefully (a lightning event often takes out multiple components in sequence), repair every affected stage, and where appropriate recommend an AVR or proper surge protector to prevent recurrence. See our emergency TV repair page.

Brands We Repair

We repair every major TV brand sold in South Africa: Samsung, LG, Sony, Hisense, TCL, Skyworth, Panasonic, Sinotec, JVC, Toshiba, Philips, Telefunken, Devanti, Blaupunkt and Sharp. Each has a dedicated repair page.

Yes, as our default. We source genuine OEM parts through authorised South African distributors for Samsung, LG, Sony, Hisense, Panasonic, Philips, Toshiba and the other major brands. On older or discontinued models where OEM parts are no longer manufactured, we use compatible high-quality equivalents and tell you on the quote — never silently. The grey market is full of fake T-Cons and counterfeit LED strips, and we don't use them.

Nathtec is an independent specialist repairer, not a Samsung or LG owned service centre. We are however a long-established Gauteng customer of the brands' South African parts distributors, and many of our technicians have completed manufacturer training programmes. If your TV is still under the original manufacturer warranty, please go to the official authorised service centre first — your warranty covers that.

Yes — we specialise in them. The mid-tier and budget brands often have very limited official service support in South Africa, which is exactly why we built dedicated Sinotec, Devanti, Blaupunkt, Telefunken and JVC repair pages. Our component-level approach works particularly well on these brands because we don't need a model-specific service contract — we repair the underlying circuit.

Usually yes, with one caveat. Hardware repairs (backlight, power supply, T-Con) work identically on grey-import TVs. The challenge is firmware: imported sets often run regional firmware that won't accept South African DVB-T2 broadcasts or local streaming services natively. We can usually convert these via service-mode region change, but it requires testing per model. Send us the model number first.

How Our Service Works

Both. Faults that don't require panel disassembly (HDMI ports, firmware, capacitor work, sound issues, Wi-Fi, remote sensors) are routinely fixed in your home. Faults requiring panel disassembly (backlight strip replacement, T-Con board work, OLED diagnostics) usually go to our Gauteng workshop where we have full bench tooling, ESD-safe surfaces and optical alignment equipment.

Yes. Every TV collected by Nathtec is fully insured for transport, handling and time-in-workshop up to its current replacement value. We use padded transport stands, foam corner protectors and dedicated TV transit boxes for 65-inch and larger sets. You receive a signed collection note documenting the TV's existing physical condition.

Within our core service area (most of Johannesburg, Sandton, Midrand and the Pretoria CBD) collection and delivery is free with any approved repair. Outside the core area a travel fee of R180 to R550 applies depending on distance. The travel fee is always quoted up front and is non-negotiable surprise-free.

Standard hours are Monday to Friday 08:00 to 18:00 and Saturday 09:00 to 15:00. Sunday and after-hours call-outs are available for genuine emergencies — surge damage before a major event, business display failure, no-picture-on-match-day — at a R420 to R780 after-hours surcharge. Book emergency service through our emergency TV repair page.

Three options: call 078 721 3551, WhatsApp the same number with a short description and a photo of the TV's rear sticker, or fill out the quote form on any service page. We respond within minutes during business hours with a likely cause, a price range and the next available slot.

Section 5 of 8

Warranty & Guarantees

Every repair carries a 90-day parts and workmanship warranty from the date of completion. The warranty document is sent to you by email and WhatsApp at sign-off and includes the date, TV model number, serial number, repair description and signed technician name.

The warranty covers the specific fault we repaired and any directly related components we replaced. If that same fault returns within 90 days we re-repair the TV at zero cost — including parts, labour and collection where applicable. New, unrelated faults (a separate component failing after our repair) are quoted separately, although we typically discount the labour for returning customers.

Call or WhatsApp us with your warranty reference number. We arrange collection (or in-home callback) at no cost, diagnose the recurrence, and either re-repair the same component or replace it with an upgraded part. The whole process is free — that is the point of the warranty.

No — a fresh lightning strike, drop or physical impact to the TV after our repair is a new incident, not a recurrence. We will of course repair the new damage, often with a returning-customer discount, but it falls outside the original 90-day warranty.

Areas We Service

Our core in-home service area covers Johannesburg, Sandton, Pretoria, Midrand, Randburg and Soweto. Workshop collection is available across the wider Gauteng region — Centurion, Roodepoort, Krugersdorp, Edenvale, Boksburg, Benoni, Kempton Park, Alberton, Vereeniging and beyond. See our full service area map.

Within the core area, no — collection, delivery and in-home call-out are included with any approved repair. Outside the core area, a travel fee of R180 to R550 applies depending on distance, always quoted up front before you commit. No work begins (and no travel fee is incurred) until you confirm in writing.

We don't routinely send technicians outside Gauteng, but we do accept courier-in repairs from the Free State, Mpumalanga, North West and Limpopo. We provide pre-prepared packing instructions, you arrange your preferred courier (Aramex, Postnet or The Courier Guy), we repair and return the same way. Lead time is typically 5 to 8 working days inclusive of courier transit.

For in-home call-outs in the core area, our typical arrival window is the same business day if you book before 12pm, or the following morning if you book later. Emergency same-day calls are usually attended within 2 to 4 hours. Workshop collection slots are typically next-day.

Section 7 of 8

Payment Methods

Cash, EFT, all major credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express), SnapScan, Zapper, and the major instant-payment apps from FNB, Standard Bank, Absa, Nedbank, Capitec and TymeBank. Our technicians carry mobile card terminals for in-home work.

For standard repairs, no — payment is due on completion once you have inspected the TV. Where we have to order a high-value OEM part specifically for your TV (typically anything over R2,200 in parts cost), we ask for a 50% deposit to cover the part order. The deposit is non-refundable if you later cancel after the part is shipped, which we tell you in writing first.

Yes. Every repair receives a fully tax-compliant invoice with our VAT number, parts breakdown, labour line, totals and warranty terms — emailed and WhatsApp'd to you at the close of the job. Perfect for insurance claims and business expense records.

Yes — and we deal with insurance claims often. We provide the documentation insurers typically request: a detailed fault report, photographs of the failed component, a written cause of failure (e.g. surge event), a parts list and a final invoice. The customer usually pays us directly and recovers from the insurer with our paperwork.

Section 8 of 8

Smart TVs & Streaming

Yes — this is one of the most common Smart TV faults we see, and almost always a corrupted firmware update interrupted by a power cut. We re-flash the VIDAA OS via Hisense service mode using the manufacturer firmware binary for your specific model. The TV returns to a clean, factory-fresh OS state. Typical cost R660 to R1,100. See our Hisense repair page.

LG webOS boot failures usually stem from one of three causes: storage corruption from interrupted updates, a failed firmware download from LG's South African servers, or a low-voltage rail on the main board causing the SoC to under-volt. We diagnose the specific cause and either re-flash webOS or repair the underlying hardware. More on LG webOS repair.

Samsung Tizen app crashes are usually one of: cache build-up in the Smart Hub, a partially updated Tizen system file, or low free internal storage. The fix is a Smart Hub reset followed by a Tizen system re-flash to current version. We perform this in your home in under an hour. More on Samsung Tizen.

Buffering on a Sony or TCL Android TV is almost always Wi-Fi rather than the TV itself. We carry signal-strength meters and test your Wi-Fi RSSI at the TV's exact position. If signal is the issue we recommend repositioning or a Wi-Fi range extender. If the TV's internal Wi-Fi module is genuinely failing (RSSI dropping despite strong nearby phone signal) we replace the module. See our Wi-Fi repair page.

Yes — that's the heart of our Smart TV setup service. We log in to Netflix, Showmax, DStv Stream, Disney+, Amazon Prime, YouTube and Apple TV using your credentials, configure parental controls, hide unused apps, calibrate the picture and audio, and hand over a complete walk-through. Three tiers — Basic R550, Full R1,100, Premium R1,700.

Why Has Nathtec Built the Largest TV Repair FAQ in Gauteng?

Over more than a decade of running a high-volume TV repair operation across the whole of Gauteng, we have noticed a consistent pattern: the same twenty or thirty questions come up over and over again, asked in slightly different ways. How much will this cost? How long will it take? Can you come to my house? What if it breaks again? Do you fix Hisense as well as Samsung? The answers haven't changed dramatically year to year, but the volume of people asking has — particularly since the rise of WhatsApp as a customer-service channel and the explosion of streaming-related smart TV issues that began with the lockdown years.

Rather than re-typing the same answers fifty times a week, we decided to publish them all in one place — on this page — so that anyone in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Sandton, Midrand, Randburg or Soweto can read through and arrive at the call already informed. That makes the eventual diagnostic call shorter, the quote more meaningful, and the whole repair process less stressful for everyone involved. It also gives Google a clear, structured signal about which questions we genuinely have the experience and authority to answer, which helps the right customers find us.

The Honest Truth About TV Repair Pricing in South Africa

The single most common question on this entire page is some variant of "how much will it cost?". The honest answer, which we always lead with, is that the price range for any given fault is wide — sometimes very wide — and we cannot give a confident final number without seeing the TV. A no-power Samsung 55-inch can be a R780 capacitor or a R4,500 panel-side failure, and only diagnosis tells us which. What we can do is bracket the likely range based on the model, the symptom and what we have seen on similar units in the past, and that is exactly what the WhatsApp pre-quote conversation is for.

The other thing worth knowing about pricing in this industry is that the South African TV repair market is unfortunately full of practices we don't agree with. Some operators charge a non-refundable "diagnostic" of R720 or more, regardless of whether you proceed. Some quote artificially low to get the TV in the workshop and then revise sharply upwards after disassembly. Some swap whole boards on every job because it's faster than component-level work, then mark up the boards by 100% or more. Our position has always been: one honest diagnostic fee, fully waived on repair, one written quote before any work, no upward revisions without your written approval. It's not complicated; it's just how it should be done.

The Smart TV Era — Why Software Questions Now Outnumber Hardware Ones

Five years ago, the vast majority of TV repair calls in Gauteng were genuine hardware faults — failed capacitors, blown backlights, dead T-Con boards. Today, almost half of the calls we receive begin with a software symptom: VIDAA stuck on the Hisense logo, webOS refusing to update on an LG, Tizen apps crashing on a Samsung, Google TV constantly buffering on a Sony or TCL. The hardware is increasingly reliable. The software, with its constant update cycles and dependencies on external servers, is increasingly fragile — particularly when combined with South Africa's mains supply patterns. We've adapted by carrying complete brand-specific firmware libraries, service-mode access tools and the diagnostic equipment to distinguish a software fault from a hardware one quickly and reliably. A great many of the calls we now answer are resolved without any component being replaced at all.

How to Use This FAQ Effectively

If you are reading this page because something has gone wrong with your TV right now, the most useful thing you can do is: identify the rough category (pricing, repair turnaround, smart TV issue, etc.), read the three or four questions in that section that look closest to your situation, then call or WhatsApp us on 078 721 3551 with the answers you already have. The conversation will be much faster, the price range will be much tighter, and the eventual repair (if you proceed) will be much smoother. Have your TV's model number ready — it's printed on a white sticker on the rear of the unit, and is the single most useful piece of information you can give us.

For more specific guidance, see the dedicated pages we have built on each of the most common topics: repair cost guide, common TV problems, troubleshooting steps to try before calling, emergency and out-of-hours service, same-day repair, smart TV setup, and our individual brand pages for Samsung, LG, Sony, Hisense, TCL and the others. Together they form the most thorough TV-repair knowledge base any independent repair business has built in South Africa, and they're all open to you.

Built From Real Customer Conversations

Every single question above has been asked of us, by real customers in real Gauteng homes and businesses, in the past six months. We rewrite the answers periodically as pricing shifts, as new TV models hit the market, and as new failure patterns emerge. Hisense Laser TVs barely existed five years ago; today they are a routine part of our workshop intake. Android TV was a minority platform; today Sony, TCL and several Skyworth models all run Google TV. webOS used to be a fringe operating system; today it is on every LG sold in South Africa from the OLED flagships down to the 32-inch entry sets. This FAQ has to keep up — and we update it quarterly with new questions and refreshed answers.

To book a repair, get a quote or just ask a follow-up to anything you have read here, the fastest route is always WhatsApp on 078 721 3551. We are usually replying within five minutes during business hours, and within an hour on weekends. Send the TV's model number, a brief description of the fault, and your suburb — we will respond with a likely cause, a price range, and the next available service slot.
